Week 15 of BZ adventure

April 4 - April 11

Saturday, April 5

Woke up at 8:30 outside the Apollo car rental place and cleaned up Shania for drop off. We are not sad to see her go. 5346km around Australia is a lot plus sleeping in her sucked.

We caught a cab to our hotel and life is good again.
Lennie was able to book 3 free nights at the Sheraton in the Park in downtown Sydney with the points he has with his Amex. It is a dream come true. Huge corner suite, bathtub, king bed, and right in the middle of Hyde park. We arrived too early for a room but they took our luggage and sent us to the spa. We had steams, saunas, showers and slept outside by their pool. At 1:00 we got the room, had a snack and hit the pavement to see the sights.

At the end of the road that the hotel is on is the famous harbour. We saw the bridge and opera house first and tour around snapping a ton of photos.

I love seeing things for the first time that I have only seen on TV and in the movies. It, of course, is even more magnificent in real life. We found an awesome pub and pizza place, split a pizza, and walked back in the cool evening air. What a place, spot, and day. We only slept a couple of hours the last couple of days so we were pooped and knew we had a lots of sightseeing tomorrow including the famous Bondi beach so we hit the sack early.

Sunday, April 6
They turned the clocks back here in Australia so we got another hour of sleep in the gorgeous room and hotel. We woke up late and it is raining. We decided to hit the spa again and sat in the hot tub and patio for a while while the sun tried to come out. Lennie went and got some groceries so we had a picnic in the room.

We have arranged for a bus tour tomorrow so we walked the streets, shopped, watch street performers, a movie, and went to the casino where I cash out over $500. Yahoo, that will help in New Zealand. We walked from our hotel to the Star casino over the Darling Harbour bridge, great sites and sounds in that popular area.

Monday, April 7
Got up and caught our double decker bus tour. $40 for the day with 36 possible stops. We have seen a ton already so Bondi beach was high on our list to see. We walked about 500m and caught the bus right on schedule. We saw so many wonderful sites in and around Sydney. What a city.
As we returned through the downtown area is was pouring rain so sitting on top of the double decker was out of the question. Len made the great suggestion to get off and walk back to the hotel and have our packed picnic there. We dried off from the rain, ate our lunch, and caught the bus to Bondi Beach.
After an information filled trip we arrived to the world famous beach.

It was not what I expected as it was much smaller than I thought. I have watched the TV show Bondi Rescue and it looked huge. There were many surfers and swimmers even though it was overcast.

We took some photos, watched the surfers, and enjoyed happy hour at a pub. We caught the bus back to the hotel, toured Hyde Park and went back to the spa to warm up.
We are sad to say goodbye to this beautiful city and country but we have enjoyed our 28 days here. Len went and bought us a pizza while I tried to figure out how to pack our bags for our next adventure.

 Tuesday, April 8
We arranged for an airport shuttle to pick us up at 7:40 for our flight to Auckland. Dropped our luggage at the counter, caught our flight, and reflected on such a great adventure already.
We landed about 3 hours later in Auckland where we arranged for a night at the Best Western since our tour didn't start till tomorrow. We looked for a cab and the helper told us to call the Best Western as they have a free shuttle. Not having a phone, another person told us of a free phone. We called, they came, it was free, awesome.

We checked in and got a great room of the first floor so we didn't have to lug our stuff too far. They gave us free wifi and a recommendation for dinner at a steak place called Bar and Baa. Knowing gas prices here are over 2$ we were worried about the cost. Well, it was the best steaks and sauces we have ever had and for a great price.

After dinner I remember that we needed to do laundry stat so we inquired at the front desk and once again we were very happily surprised when they shared it was free and just beside our room. What? Free? Awesome. I did all our clothes for our trip, reorganized our bags and booked our hotels for our trip in California. After we stay in Dana's Point with our friends. Mike and Laurie, we are driving to Seattle to see my bother. Lennie once again scored with his SPG points and got us all free rooms plus I booked us in Vegas for a couple a days for free.

I also realized we are booked back in this hotel for Friday the 18th when our tour is done so free laundry and dinner at the Bar and Baa will be in order.
Last request I made was if we could leave 2 extra suitcase bags here while we are on tour (we only need one soft sided thing with clothes) and the hotel said no problem for free (I called the hostel and they wanted $12 a week plus $3 a day. Great savings again just for asking. We are getting smarter on this trip :)

Wednesday, April 9
We needed to meet our tour at a hostel (yes hostel not hotel) in downtown Auckland so we got up and organized to get a shuttle to get there. The hotel found us one for $35 flat rate so we were thrilled as we know downtown is far from the airport. We arrived at the hostel, they gave us a great ensuite room, and waited for our 7:00pm pre meeting with our G Adventures CEO (chief experience officer) Marie Smith.

In the meantime we hit the downtown, got my nails done, ate lunch, found wifi, and toured around. We took a nap then met the other 9 people. They are German, Swiss, and American. We filled in our forms and went for dinner. What nice people and restaurant, free jug of beer with a pizza. Everyone ate and drank.
We are the oldest and only the second couple. Breakfast at 7:00am with the bus leaving at 8:00am for the boat tour. So excited.

Thursday, April 10
We were awoken early to begin our trip north of the city and to the north part of the island. We had a terrible sleep due to a night club being outside our window.
We need to get use to the hostel and nomad way of life way - I realize now that I don't like it being a 45 year old person while the rest are 20 year old students. I don't have their same energy or enthusiasm for change.
I really am getting tired of moving and packing every single day. I think that is why I enjoyed Sydney so much as we had 3 sleeps in the same bed. I will get thru this tour and I look forward to a week in our condo in California.

We ate our breakfast and got in the van for a drive to the Island of Bays.

The day really turned around for me. The other 7 people are so fun, kind, and sweet. Our first stop was at a museum to share the kauri tree. They are like Redwoods to us and the US. Huge and endangered.
We moved further north and stopped for lunch at Goat Island and took some beautiful pictures. We traveled further to Bay of Islands in Paihia, where we caught a tender to a floating hostel.

The barge held 32 people and was an old ferry for cars. There are 5 crew, the 10 of us (9 and Marie), a group of 3 cricket players, a cutie from Wales, and a family of three from the US living in Melbourne. We immediate got to do paintball off the back of the boat to a floating duck, so funny as the boat was moving and the duck was jumping too. They got us all hooked up to fish. I caught the first one and Lennie caught the second one, just small snapper but still cool.

We parked in a cove and had a delicious BBQ then played pool (yes a pool table on a floating barge), talked, and had drinks by a fire, yes they had a wood stove on the boat. Then they pulled out the kayaks and we went for a night kayak to see the stars and the phosphoresce plankton. What a cool thing, as you paddled it stirred up the water and it looked like a million fireflies under the water. The stars in the Southern Hemisphere are beautiful and so different from the ones I have seen in and around North America.
At night, I had to room with 4 boys but turned out it was a great sleep. There were 6 bunks and I wore my eye mask and ear plugs. Woke up 6:30am wow.

Friday, April 11
I woke up at 6:30 which was awesome - probably a good 6 hour sleep for me. I quickly looked out and caught so many amazing sunrise photos.

I made my way downstairs to fish off the back of boat again. Had a ton of bites but no catches for me. After a hot breakfast everyone went snorkelling in another cove for sea urchins which they cut and ate later. We moved the barge to an island (Roberton Island) which we climbed to the top off, played on the beach, and tendered back.

They provided us with a delicious lunch of sandwiches, granola bars, brownies, and oranges. We headed back to the town of Paihia to head to our hostel. I paid $20 so Lennie and I could have our own room. Turns out they gave us a suite.

We were chosen to be in the first group for a late afternoon adventure, a Waka tour with a Maori. A Waka is a traditional canoe.

Nick had us go onto 2 beaches, pick a shell, and he made us all necklaces.
He then cracked some wine and crackers because the time was too high to catch oysters and cook them on the beach. Our host Nick was so wonderful, knowledgeable, and funny. He taught us the traditional greeting of touching noses and foreheads.

We headed back to the hostel for dinner and more fun. Tomorrow we are going to Russell - New Zealand's first capital. We have to take a ferry then we will head back to Auckland and the first hostel and continue our tour south.

Today was awesome.

Week 13 of BZ adventure

March 21 - March 28

Saturday, March 22
Woke up after a great sleep in Rockhampton, ate a great breakfast and drove 344km south to Hervey Bay. The drive was pretty good but with just 2 lanes and so many places you go through, it is a long slow drive. Also, the A1 their main highway is all under construction so every 10km you have to slow for the workers. It's painful but today was shorter than the others.
We got a great site near the beach, toured around, got groceries and beer, Lennie BBQ for us and it was a great day.

We continue to see other Hippie vans and wave - they are also named after big singers. We have seen Bruce, Rod, Celine, Joss, Dave, Marley, and Sid, they all think theirs is small and uncomfortable too. Lennie loves this though so I can't say ANYTHING negative. He did climb that damn mountain for me.

Sunday, March 23
Woke up early to catch our shuttle to the Fraser Island 1 day adventure. It cost $150 for a wonderful boat ride to the island with many stops on and around the island. We booked through www.tasmanventure.com.au and after our day in Cairns it would be hard to beat.
Well today was amazing. 2 person crew on a huge boat with only 10 others. We toured right away to seeing pods of dolphins. We stopped on Fraser Island and climbed dunes to see a beautiful forest. We travelled to a free water creek to kayak.

We moved onto snorkelling and saw a shark and turtles. We moved to next snorkel and it started raining - what fun. Moved back to boat for amazing BBQ. Moved back to island for freshwater kayak, wave biscuiting, and wonderful final swim in fresh water creek. Back home after 6:00 for a late dinner and showers. So happy we book these day adventures.

Monday, March 24
Left the wonderful Hervey Bay for Brisbane. Today was the day I would hold a koala bear - one of the things on my list to stoke off. There are many places to hold a koala but they are expensive, hard to get to with our agenda, and just not the best. We wanted the best sanctuary so we could make a donation to their rescue program. We went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary just south west of Brisbane. They have over 150 koalas, plus a gazillion other cool things. We saw Tasmanian devils and platypus that we have never seen. For $2 you buy kangaroo food and can walk into a giant field with wild kangaroos roaming and you feed them right in your hand.

Awesome. For $16 you can hold and cuddle a koala plus get a professional photo.

I couldn't stop crying so needed a retake. So embarrassing but I was so overwhelmed holding Max, he was so cute and cuddly. Lennie snapped some photos so I could uploaded them plus I got the pro photo. We tour around more and saw beautiful birds, snakes, and lizards.
We left and traveled south to Miami, Queensland where we found a site, Len grabbed us an amazing homemade pizza, and we had a great sleep. It rained throughout the night do it was nice and cool this morning.

Tuesday, March 25
My brother sent me a message and asked if we could stop and see his university friend Simon while we are here. I emailed a few times and Simon invited us to his wonderful home in Arrawarra, New South Wales. It is totally on our way so we have built it into our plans.

They live in a big 2 storey home which is under construction. The beach is a stone throw away and this is a great life. They have offered us to sleep in there bunk house so we got out of the van for the night - yahoo. Can't wait for tomorrow, laundry and a bed.
We drove to Byron Bay for the day and what a great town. It is right on the ocean and has a beautiful lighthouse we explored and then we found a great place to stay for the night in Broken Head.

Wednesday, March 26
Got up in Broken Bay and sat at the beach to watch the amazing surfers. We made our way to Simon's house about 200km south. He lives on the beach so we watched boats come and go then made our way to Coffs Harbour for the afternoon till Simon was home from work. I got my nails done, bought some wine as a thank you, and Lennie shopped and got a phone card.

We got to Simons and it is totally under construction.

They are adding a second storey so you can imagine. We met his adorable 10 year old twins; Quinn and Mikala. We read, play games, did origami, while Simon made a lamb roast. His wife Val got home from work and we talked for hours.
They took us to their bunk house in the back where we got a bed and our own space. What a treat.

Thursday, March 27
Slept in till 9:00am awesome. The bed was so lovely with 2 pillows each and a gorgeous duvet. Simon made some porridge for breakfast and we chatted more about Canada and Australia. I was able to do our laundry, booked my flight to Tasmania (more on that later) and Lennie went golfing. We were able to FaceTime with Scotty and our bud Rich which is always nice. We were called to a neighbours house who caught a 10.4kg mackerel which Simon cooked for dinner. I don't like fish but this was delicious. Right from the ocean and fresh. Proud of myself for eating it and the lamb the night before.

Friday, March 28
Lennie and I are expected in Melbourne Monday night and we have about 1500+km to get there so we got up and sadly left the Watson family. Long drive day through the rain but we have a very busy week next week so we just chugged along till outside Sydney in Goulburn, NSW where we found a pretty good site for the night. Too much driving , almost 11 hours. Yucky van.

Week 12 of BZ adventure

March 14 - 21

Saturday, March 15
Awoke in beautiful Cairns at the wonderful campsite. We slept better as it was a tad cooler with the breeze but still 25+. We drove north to the Mossman Gorge it was a wonderful cool stream and we stayed in for an hour. It costs $7 for a short bus ride from the parking lot to the lookout boardwalk and river. Totally worth it.

We also stopped in Palm Cove to check out the beach. So beautiful. Lennie has the driving perfect but the roundabouts here are nuts. We met a Canadian at the gorge who is from Montreal. We returned to our camp to rest up for tomorrow's big snorkelling day.

Sunday, March 16
We booked a wonderful all day Great Barrier Reef excursion today with wwwseastarcruises.com.au. At 7:30 we meet 34 other people plus a crew at the wharf for breakfast, got wet suits, and our snorkel equipment. At 8:00 we left for Michaelmas Cay.

We spent a couple of hours on the remote reef island and saw unbelievable fish and wildlife while snorkeling.

Back on the boat for lunch of a hot and cold buffet; chicken scalloped potatoes, meats, cheeses, salads - so good then off to another reef island. This time we went to Hastings Outer Reef.

It was like swimming in an aquarium or being in the movie Finding Nemo. Back at the wharf at 4:00 after an amazing day where we went out for dinner and had burgers and the most delicious gelato ever!

Monday, March 17
We left Cairns and headed south to Mission Beach. It took a couple of hours but it was beautiful. We booked a night at the same trailer park chain as the one in Cairns. We ate left over pizza and crackers/cheese for lunch then went on a tour of the area. Wow, again amazing sea side views plus we are in the middle of the rain forest. Len was driving and yelled "kangaroo" but it wasn't - it was just a small wallaby. We went to the grocery store and bought salad and a roasted chicken and enjoyed some ciders and beers at the site.
We met a great local named Ray who Len is going to golf with on Wednesday.
Finally bought a fan so it is much cooler sleeping. Still hot but at least a small breeze exists.

Tuesday, March 18
Woke up, showered, breakfast and left at 9:00 for South Mission beach for the day/night. Right on the beach is the site and the water is gorgeous. Must swim in a netted area so the sting rays don't get you but it's still neat.
Swam in the ocean, did laundry, and floated in the pool. Have I told you how hot it is here? We needed shade and the fan stat.

Got picked up by Mission Beach resort for their pizza/pasta buffet. They also had slots but I lost $50. We returned to see an amazing moon rising above the islands.

Wednesday, March 19
Woke up early to drop Lennie off at golf. Yep he is golfing in Australia. I got to drive the van - I wasn't too bad. The problem was not it being a standard, or small sitting area, or the blinker on the right, but that the seat does not go back causing your foot to cramp :(. I picked Lennie up at El Arish golf course at noon, said good bye to our friend Ray, and we made our way slowly south.

We stopped for sandwiches at 1:00, in Cardwell for a look at their seaside, and on to Townsville.

We are making our way to Airlie Bech to spend some time visiting Whitsunday islands - our bud Shawn told us we have to go there so we are. We made it to Aye and found a nice windy campsite. Len did more groceries and we had salad and eggs for dinner. So much cooler of a sleep. Excited for tomorrow's adventures.

Thursday, March 20
Woke up early, packed, and headed south through Bowen to Airlie Beach. Wow what a place. Beautiful spots, views, hotels, and shops.
Unfortunately a huge storm from the pacific - some sort of tropical storm thingie slammed us.

Rained all day, everything soaked, we got a pizza and movies and hid in the van. In the middle of the night our awning flipped over the van and bent. Len had lots of curse words in the rain trying to reattach it. I slept zero.

Friday, March 21
Woke up at 6:00 and tried to go back to sleep. Re woke up at 8:00, Len made some toast and yogurt and we hit the road. It was still raining. Rained until 2:00 as we approached RockHampton. We stopped to see the Tropic of Capricorn line - very cool.

Realized today that I really hate the van. So small, old, no airbags, seats won't move, and it has no shocks. So uncomfortable and we have 4000km to go. No sure what I hate more, the sleeping in it or the driving in it.
Arrived in Rockhampton and got a nice spot for the night. Much cooler and we had a great sleep. Tomorrow on to Hervey Bay for more adventures.

Week 11 of BZ adventure

March 7 - 14

Saturday, March 8
It was soooo hot. We had our breakfast after sleeping in a it because I had too any drinks last night. We hit the beach and got really burned. I had another spa day so at 4:00 Lennie dropped me off for a facial and hair treatment. He too hit a spa then picked me up for dinner. We went to a wonderful spot and had pizza and beers. We retuned to the loft and Lennie went back to Barbie Q but I was so tired and burned I needed to relax.

Sunday, March 9
Woke up and had our wonderful breakfast at the cafe. Lennie and I wanted to explore more so drove to Kuta. The beaches were so busy so we went back to our favourite "double 6". We spent hours there, drove back to the loft, changed and went for a wonderful dinner at Patty's Burgers. They even had poutine. We went to the Barbie Q for a final drink and returned for a swim at the loft. We saw so many people on mopeds including a family of 4.

Monday, March 10
Today we awoke and packed our bags. Our flight is at 6:55pm so we toured around taking photos and caught a ride to the airport. Bail has been so wonderful, fun, and beautiful. We arrived in Singapore at 9:30 and caught a cab to Kristine's. We bought the kids kites so we built them and had them set up so they could see them in the morning.

Tuesday, March 11
Slept in after we got up and saw the kids off to school. Watched a couple movies till everyone came home from school. We bought everyone a big pasta dinner and we headed out to the night safari with the kids. Bye bye beautiful SE Asia.

Wednesday, March 12
It's flight to Australia Day! What a long day. We left Kristine's at 5:30 and had a terrific flight on qantas airlines to Brisbane landing in the early morning. We have been so lucky to once again have 3 seats to ourselves plus lots of food/drink.

Thursday, March 13
We arrived in Brisbane and caught another flight to Cairns. We have booked a deluxe camper van till April 8 to see all the sites. We have international drivers licences so we can both drive.

The van is small, hot, and right side driving plus a standard. Lennie got the hang of it pretty quickly. We tour around the town and went grocery shopping. We then found a great campsite called Cairns holiday place. It was 30$ a night for water and electricity. Lennie cooked some sausages and I passed out at 7:00pm.

Friday, March 14
We woke up several times in the night because it was so hot but we got a nice breeze about 4:00am. Woke up at 9:00 and had a shower, breakfast, and took off for the sites. We hit the liquor store, PJ O'briens pub where a friend asked us to pop in because he use to work there, and bought tickets for an all day Great Barrier Reef adventure for Sunday. Lennie then found the casino, a pizza place, and we had a great dinner.

Week 10 of BZ adventure

February 28 - March 7

Friday, February 28 Got up and enjoyed a leisurely morning with our safari friends. We ate breakfast, played cards, and each departed from Arusha for the airport. We all left for different adventures.
Lennie and I caught a flight to Ethiopia for our flight to Singapore. It was a long long long day. We had a lay off in Addis Ababa and our flight to Singapore stopped in Bangkok in which most people got off and we had the plane to our selves the rest of the way.

Saturday, March 1
Kristine picked us up at the airport at 6:30 PM and took us on a tour before getting to her home. What a great life they have. We stayed up as late as we could and I went to bed at 11:15. Lennie and Kristine's husband Ryan went to a party at pool area being held by a German family. Lennie had a great time and met some wonderful people. We tried to sleep. Oh, and I returned a book to Kristine I borrowed 7 years ago - I promised I would come to Singapore to return it.

Sunday, March 2
Woke up and stayed in bed till 1:00pm. Kristine had gone for a run and sent the kids to a movie. We showered and when the kids got home we went to the pool. It was nice to relax in the sun and water and meet some friends. Kristine made a wonderful vegetable lasagna and chocolate chip cookies.

Monday, March 3
Today we slept in again as my stomach still wasn't 100%. Kristine's husband Ryan doesn't teach on Mondays so he took us on a tour of their school, dropped us at the botanical gardens and then picked us up later on Orchard Road (the rodeo drive of Singapore) it was so bloody hot we stopped at a 7 11 and got a slushie. Arrived home to hang with the kids and talk to Kristine about life and education inSingapore and had a delicious spaghetti dinner and chocolate cake. Lennie went and played tennis with the boys while Kristine and I walked their 3 dogs then went to see Carmen at gymnastics. She is fantastic at it, Len said Vincent is an amazing tennis player. Both parents are so fit and athletic their kids had to be.

Tuesday, March 4
Today Lennie and I caught a cab to the Singapore flyer. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in the world. What a view we got. We also went to the Marina Bay Sands hotel, casino, and shopping centre. I finally got to have a Singapore Sling!

Wednesday, March 5
We have packed and organized for our trip to Bali. I was very lazy today and slept till noon then lounged around the pool. The kids came home from school, we had a delicious curry for dinner then they went to swimming while Kristine and I looked at jobs at international schools. Kids came home, we had chocolate chops cookies and laughed. They are so freaking adorable.

Thursday, March 6
At noon caught our flight to Bali. We got picked up at the airport by our driver and taken to our apartment Lennie rented. It was a 2 storey beauty. Lennie found this apartment called Balcony Living. 2. Storeys, kitchen, pool, air, gorgeous.

I jumped in the pool while Lennie walked around finding us a place for dinner. I really can't believe we are here. We walked 5 minutes up the road to a place called Barbie Q and we had drinks and dinner for cheap cheap cheap.

Friday, March 7
We woke up and realized we needed a moped to get around.

We leased one for 6$ day and spent the morning driving around and at the beach. I bought some beautiful jewelry and scarfs.

We also booked a couple massage, mani/pedi at BodyWorks the big spa here in Seminyaka.

It was wonderful and just like a travel magazine, we then went for dinner at a wonderful place called Rumours then back to Barbie Q for a night cap where we face timed the Grump, Renee, Scotty, Megan, and Kevin. So fun to talk to people thru that app.
